Day 4 - A main antagonist, their bio.
Pascal’s biggest antagonist is Roger Helpers (on the right, the one with a yellow cowlick). He is practically everything Pascal isn’t. Confident, robust-looking and articulate… and also a big brown-noser and not really a good scientist. His career success is mostly due to kissing up to older and bigger names (namely Knibby on the left, more about him later). He doesn’t have many ideas of his on and usually just agrees with the thoughts of the person he’s kissing up to.
Helpers plays his role really well and unfortunately, first impressions still matter - people think of him as a scientist when he enters a room in a white lab coat and says a couple of smart words. While when Pascal enters a room and opens his mouth people usually wonder if he knows his name and can cross a street without supervision.
Helpers wanted to be on McFael’s team when McFael started his project at ERF. But McFael saw right through him and refused him a position. It was about the same time Pascal started working at ERF under McFael’s supervision. Helpers hates Pascal because he can’t understand how this awkward mumbling weird man can be possibly better than him. He acts seemingly friendly around Pascal but he’s actually looking for ways to humiliate him.
Helpers works under the supervision of Gerard Knibby (on the left, with the mustache). Knibby is more of McFael’s antagonist but since he directly influences Helpers and dislikes Pascal and his theories he becomes Pascal’s antagonist too. When I first came up with Knibby my description of him was “Think of your least favorite teacher”. Knibby thinks the Many Worlds Interpretation (the very basis of Pascal’s work) is rubbish and parallel worlds don’t exist. He isn’t stupid (and he used to be a good professional back in his day) but, like many old people, he got so used to being right about things he forgot that he can be wrong sometimes too. Pascal and his theories irritate Knibby and he’s also prejudiced - he thinks that if Pascal is clumsy and can’t speak clearly then he must be stupid too. He sees Pascal as a “disgrace of our scientific community” and grumbles at him every time they meet in the hallways.
Naturally, Pascal doesn’t like Helpers or Knibby much either.
And that’s all for today! I hope to start updating more often from now on.
