Because Alak is so doted upon, he really is charming and happy, and maybe a little spoiled but mostly he's just a content little kid who talks to adults because adults love him!!!

I think Stahma was really hoping that offering him the stuff would prove him to be a thief but like, a good-hearted one? She doesn't mind sharing, she just prefers it to be on her terms, but this was not going to be a good deal and she can't fight him because Alak is there and he could get hurt and worst, worst!

Also, pretty sure Datak destroyed this guy later, specifically because how freaked out he was. He was able to lock it down (again, because of Alak) but oh damn, this was not going to fly.

Stahma knows that telling him 'no bb don't do that' is kind of pointless- she knows the position he has in the community, and his reputation, and what he has to do to keep that reputation (carry chains around threatening, apparently) but she's like, killing later, cuddles now.

I don't think he'll ever feel unloved, and he's certainly going to be a very charming young man when he grows up--which is probably a combination of his mom's grace and his dad's clever tongue. He's a well-bred kid, in spite of what people say about mésalliances!

If there's one thing Stahma's learned, being married to Datak, it's that there are good criminals and bad ones; clearly, she was hoping this would be one of the good ones.

Also, since he proved himself to be a completely horrible person, there was really no point in trying to convince Datak not to kill the rat. It's her upper-class prejudices talking, but surely the streets would be safer if they were cleansed of such people... and for once, he agrees with her.

Alak might feel misunderstood but I don't think he'll ever be like, oh, Mom and Dad don't love me, because that's bananas.

Well, there's saying everyone deserves a chance and them watching them take that chance to prey on women rendered defenseless due to the presence of their small children.
