Book review: Maxilla

Mar 07, 2014 00:01

In our house, we love books about nature.

Our current favourite read is a book called Maxilla by local author Lianne Ong.

The story of Maxilla was written based on true life experiences by Lianne and her son, Reuben, when they were living in the Bay Area in California.

One day, Reuben finds a beautiful green caterpillar which he brings home in a box and names Maxilla. As the story unfolds, he learns what species of butterfly it will become and he has to make the difficult decision between keeping her or releasing her back to her natural habitat.

There is also a small section at the end of the book illustrating the life cycle of a butterfly.

Both Sean and Ryan enjoyed the story very much. They could identify with it to a certain extent because we see a lot of butterflies, bees and snails (and all sorts of creepy crawlies) in our little garden at home.

The story teaches them to respect all living creatures and to always leave them be in their natural habitats, however tempting it may be to catch or keep them as pets :)

Personally, I thought the story was very meaningful, informative and well-written. I also appreciated the beautiful colour pencil illustrations by Shing and the casual handwriting font which lent a very innocent child-like tone to the book.

Now I am quite keen on taking the learnings for the boys further by letting them keep their own caterpillar and watch it transform into a butterfly (using a butterfly kit from Oh Farms).
