Sean goes to the library

We are midway through the school hols and I am fast running out of ways to keep Sean entertained at home. The wet weather we have been helping hasn't been helping much either.

One place I am quite thankful for is our neighbourhood library. It is the one place that is near enough to walk from home so we have been frequenting it quite a bit.

I made the decision some time back that we should try to buy less children's books simply because with the children's fast-changing interests and reading ability, it just makes economical sense to borrow. Plus, we are fast running out of shelf space at home!

What I love about our libraries is the wide and impressive range of books and audio-visual items. In particular, Sean likes to read books featuring little boys like him, numbers, superheroes, dinosaurs, rescue vehicles, robots, pirates (he is such a boy!) and simple crafts so I always try to borrow a little bit of each for him.

The good thing about the current borrowing limit of 12 items (coz of the school hols?) is, I don't feel pressured to choose a really good book by a well-known author (like I would if I were to buy them).

In fact, even without trying very hard, we have discovered some really fun reads like Diary of a Wombat, Stanley's Stick, the Kipper series and Max, just to name a few.

You can imagine with our four library cards (Ry has one too), our haul of books home is MORE than enough to keep him entertained for a few days.

Because of all the intensive reading we have been doing together lately, Sean has been showing a lot of interest in trying to read the words in books (in fact, he gets a bit frustrated that he can't read on his own). I see that as a very encouraging sign and can't wait for him to learn how to read :)

PS. In case you are wondering, the green sunnies, must-zip-up-all-the-way-to-my-neck-hoodie and kawaii peace sign is all Sean. Gotta love a 3-year-old's sense of style!
