"But I stole all of my songs,
Probably gonna get sued,
That's alright as long as I get screwed!"
Hello and welcome to another installment of the Old Mans journal entries. I've been on an ever so brief hiatus, as I've really had nothing of great interest to post. That changes now, and this could be a long one folks!
OK. First up and as I previously mentioned, nothing has really happened this week. I've been laying low, enjoying some time to myself, and just generally doing shit all. As usual, I went out Wednesday night for Open Mic and it was a great time, as always, yours truly being suitably soused when he left. I'de go into more detail about the night, but various reasons prohibit me from doing so.
So tonight was the big night, the biggest event in MUNSU's Winter Carnival, and the only one that our house really cared about. Yes ladies and gentlemen, tonight was the night of lip sync! Unlike last year, where the lip sync was held downtown in Club One, this years festivities took place in the Phys. Ed. Gym. Now I was a bit worried about this, as the atmosphere in Club One last year was totally electric, and I was pretty sure the Gym would not be able to match it. Well, I was completely right, and while this years lip sync was still excellent, it didn't even compare to the fun of last years. Let me be even more clear here, last years lip sync was quite simply the best house night out I had last year, so it was nigh on impossible for this years to match it.
That said, the performances this year were equal, if not better, than last years. Our houses performance was particularly good (yes, I'm biased), though it is impossible for me to compare it in quality to last years, as I was a tad distracted during our performance the year before. The other houses performances were highly entertaining though, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I did leave early, before the announcement of the winners, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out how we did.
Anyway, on to the meat of this entry...Music. I know, it's a topic I probably spend far too much time covering, but I love it so much.
For some reason, probably due to the use of the song Under Pressure in our lip sync performance, Dave and I decided to download Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice after a short trip to Allandales. This is where it began. I had every intention of removing the offending piece of crap from my computer as quickly as possible, but then we delved even deeper into the depths of crap. Next up we grabbed a copy of Informer by Snow, which like Ice Ice Baby is utter crap, but was strangely popular for a time during the 90s.
The idea had been hatched, and it was now our goal to create a playlist of the most ridiculous and crappy songs of the 90s. After downloading such artists as MC Hammer, New Kids on the Block, and Right Said Fred, we hit a wall. We're really not sure what else we should get to make a totally craptacular playlist, so I'm going to ask my one or two readers to make some suggestons. This needs to happen, and we need your help to see it through.
The list thus far:
'Ice Ice Baby' by Vanilla Ice
'Informer' by Snow
'Can't Touch This' by MC Hammer
'Right Stuff' by New Kids on the Block
'I'm Too Sexy' by Right Said Fred
So once again, we need songs that are utter crap, yet have charted or been well liked for a short period of time during the 90s.
The other interesting music related topic that came up was my current music collection and what I listen to. Specifically, Dave asked me where I found most of the shit I listen to, as he's never heard of the vast majority of it. After looking through my collection, I realized he was right and a good three quarters of my collection would be unknown to the average joe.
Well, whilst growing up I had different tastes from most of my friends. I was devoted to new age ska, such as Reel Big Fish and Save Ferris, and to a lesser extent punk music (real punk music, not the shit they try to pawn off on us now). It wasn't until I started here at university that my musical tastes became much more eclectic and varied. Being exposed to so many different people meant that I was equally exposed to many different types of music. Take my friend Tristan for example. That man introduced me to the bulk of my current collection, tipping me off to such great bands as Death Cab for Cutie, Hot Hot Heat, and The New Pornographers. For that I am extremely greatful, as I thoroughly enjoy that music.
Now in addition to being introduced to different music, I have a passion for finding information on bands. That combined with the internet leads to even more great music. Another large portion of my collection is due to my searching on the internet, and finding bands that are generally far from the mainstream. I have quite a few songs by artists that haven't even been signed, and much of it is amongst my favorite.
So the fact is, alot of my musical collection exists because I search around for new stuff constantly. There is something out there for all tastes, you just have to find it. As I've said in previous entries, alot of the quality music is less well known, and you really have to look around for it.
Anyway, that's all for now...
