I'm not sure if it's a brilliant choice or a deeply stupid one. most commentators seem to be in the "deeply stupid" camp, but it kind of comes down to if American voters themselves are deeply stupid, doesn't it? About 50% of them voted for GWB twice.
She's way anti-choice, so I guess you could make the argument that she appeals to the conservative Christian base, but that base doesn't generally think highly of women in leadership positions, so really, it's a bald-faced attempt to appeal to disaffected female Hillary supporters.
The argument seems to go, "Hey, you have a vagina, and she has a vagina too! Barack Obama doesn't have a vagina, so you should vote for us!"
I want to think that female voters are smart enough to see through that bullshit, but I don't understand how some of them think. I don't get why they're still so angry at Obama after the primaries. I could get it if Hillary was all set up to win, but then she didn't because people were so scared of a woman president that they started voting for any man who wasn't her. That's not what happened, though. Barack Obama is an extremely compelling figure in his own right. He is very much more than the "anyone but Hillary" candidate, and it just seems like a lot of her voters were not paying enough attention to realize that.
