-I want to ask your about basic step in countrydances from 17th century
Is there necessity to do first step from left foot, or it could be from right foot?
People dance from right foot in Russia, but you give us from left in your master-classes in Sempteber...
-yes in UK the preference is for Left foot first
-but is it a mistake to do on the right foot or not?
-with those of us who teach 17th century country dances properly! Well it is what some people choose
I think it is more correct historically to use the Left
-I want to do it on left, but most of us dance on the right.. so it's difficult to flow up to stream
-yes I can understand your problem!
-from left because it was so in 16 and 15 centuries?
-the thought behind it is that it was not until baroque dance became so popular in the late 17th century and used the Right foot more
yes in earlier times the left was used more to start a dance
especially 15th century of course
-I want to teach my group dances, that are popular in Siberia
but all teachers (and from Moscow, and from S-Pb, and in Siberia) teach countrydances from right foot
-yes this is a problem. It is probably because of the sources they used when learning at the beginning
It might be less fuss if you taught them with right foot, and tell people that it was done with left in the 17th century
It makes it difficuly when you go to another city and people are all doing it with the RF
-I don't know from where it's with RF
maybe Playford
manuscript
-again, it will be because of the way teachers were taught and what books they used. You see, there is a lot of wrong (or differing) information
no Playford states LF
and Playford is like the Bible!
but a lot of american teachers take the RF
-may I copy our conversation in LiveJournal? I want to discuss it with everyone
I see
-yes that is ok except that I think people will prefer what is familiar, the RF!
-yes you are right
but I'll try )
-of course, as I always say, we can never be sure EXACTLY what was done, which is why I think it does not matter too much when you meet other groups if you use the RF
