The cost of television

A month or two ago I finally broke down and got myself television. This was perhaps mostly because I wanted to watch the Oscars, which, even though they probably are "Hollywood masturbation," as Lael calls them, they're a definite weakness of mine, and I seem to become very sad when I miss them. It might be not too hard to get MythTV working on a Mac. It is open source. Macs run BSD. I'm not sure about the interface to the video capture card though. But there must be someone who has figured all of this out and written a good DVR program that works on the Mac. It's likely that a lot of the software/hardware interfaces will be standardized between Linux and Macs once the Macs move over to using the i386 compatible CPUs. Then the main difference between the two will be that Macs will have a prettier interface that costs money ( ... )

You'd know the answers to your questions better than I would, but I am still waiting for computers to be as easy to use as other appliances.

Getting TV access for the Oscars is probably less silly than buying a TV (B&W, from a pawn shop) to watch Prince Charles marry Diana Spencer. Our excuse, of course, it was to hear the ringing afterwards... There was a gratifying moment when they pulled off and Dan Rather (?) nearly fell off his chair - the broadcast booth was high up and not far from the tower. Loud.
