Things to Grow On.

So a bunch of you folks are graduating high school or college or nearing the end of the school year. Good for you. I remember how excited I felt last year at this moment. I had a desire to run as far and as fast as I could from Williams. And lo I did.

Recently in the process of putting all my high school Xanga entries into Livejournal I found a post that may be helpful to a bunch of you. I've been meaning to do it a lot sooner, but I'm waiting for some laundry so I have some time on my hands. :)

You can read the original post here, but I'm going to repost it here with some college addendums.

1. Being nice pays off.*

2. Being different from everyone else is the best fashion statement you could make.**

3. Adopt more cultures into your way of living, it'll enhance your own.

4. Be nice to your teachers, and they will most likely be nice to you.***

5. Take up a sport even if you can't play on the team.

6. Don't waste your breath on ignorant people.

7. Dance as much as possible.****

8. Never turn down a joyride at ten in the evening.

9. Just because you don't have a boyfriend doesn't mean you don't have a life.

10. Travel to as many places as possible.

11. Love someone: a best friend, a parent, a boyfriend/girlfriend etc.

12. Participate in school activities, no matter how hard the administration dicks you over.*****

13. Find a spiritual path, and learn to love it.

14. Find a favorite book.

15. Splash in puddles.

16. Once you go to college you no longer have to see idiots you don't like, so don't stress.******

17. Just because a person you love physically dies, doesn't mean they die in your heart.

18. Dressing up like royalty can make you forget that you have been disgruntled with school.

19. You can go through high school without being drunk or high.*******

20. Even if no one seems to like you at the moment, you will always have a best friend: you.

21. When a friendship breaks up, there's always a new friend waiting to fill the gap.

22. You don't need a lot of friends to be happy.

23. When your best friend goes away, she will eventually return.

24. Study, even when you don't feel like it.

And my personal favorite:

25. Just because you haven't gotten what you deserve, doesn't mean you won't get it eventually.********

* It really does. I've always striven to be a generally good natured person. This has the effect of pissing all those folks off that want you to lose it and trip up.

** It got me on stage at a fashion show, and lined my pockets for four years by making custom t-shirts.

***Even when I was depressed and a crappy student my profs still loved me. I needed that when I had a due date I was iffy about.

****I tried to dance twice every weekend, plus I did Bhangra. It was wonderful for my mood.

*****The end of my Senior Year in Art and my Senior year as Captain and President of the Forensics team pretty much summed this one up. You just got to keep fighting. Always keep fighting for what you deserve.

******You may not have to see idiots you don't like from highschool, but you do get to know new ones in college. And at work. And at play. Idiots follow you through life. Just adhere to rule number 1 above and you'll do swimmingly

******* You may be able to get through high school this way, but you probably can't get through college this way. Instead focus on taking care of yourself. Never abuse drugs or alcohol to make you feel better. There will be times in college when you'll be tempted to, and trust me you'll have a nasty hangover or worse...you'll die.

********This is the most important lesson I have ever learned. Life is hard. Never expect anything to be handed to you. As long as yo do your best and work for it you will get what you deserve. Even if you don't believe in a higher power, you need to work your hardest to achieve what you want from yourself in this world. It's not easy, but you'll feel fantastic.
