This week there was a showing of The Sound of Music at the local movie theater. A sing along event, whatever. Everyone I'd asked was either too busy and/or just not interested in the movie (heretics) so I went alone-- because nothing can get between me and a remastered, high def Sound of Music on a 42 foot screen, okay?!. So, it was basically just me and a bunch of old, grey/white haired ladies sitting in the theater. There wasn't a lot of singing along (thankfully, because I just wanted the viewing experience), but there was some and I can't honestly say that I was absolutely silent when Maria starts singing My Favorite Things or when she and the kids have that marionette performance and sing Lonely Goatherd.
It's not my favorite song in the movie, but my favorite part has always, always been the Do-Re-Mi montage: Maria and the Von Trapp kids walking across a bridge; skipping along a river bank; in a horse drawn carriage; biking; running through a garden terrace; across a grassy hill; THE STEPS. If I could choose what my happiest day EVER would be like, it would be that entire montage.
When I was young(er) (I don't think I'll ever accept "old", just "older"), when we didn't have cable and/or I just wasn't interested in TV yet, there were five VHS tapes that I watched religiously: The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, a collection of Looney Tunes cartoons, Annie, and Mary Poppins. Needless to say, when I found out Julie Andrews was Mary Poppins AND Fraulein Maria, my mind exploded. Age 5.
What would it be like to grow up and not know, or love, The Sound of Music? I can't imagine my life without it. That is not to say that people who've never seen it, or don't like it at all are blasphemers and heretics (even though, deep [deep] down inside I really believe it - ha!) and that my life would be empty without having seen it (how can you lack something that was never yours anyway?)-- but... my life would be different, certainly. This movie makes me happy, like no other movie makes me happy and when I feel really shitty, I just pop this in the DVD player and I'm good to go.
I love Blade Runner, Life Aquatic, La Pianiste, Portrait of Jenny, Days of Heaven, Metropolis, but I LOVE The Sound of Music. Nothing comes closer to my heart, as far as movies go. I may very well just be looking at this through a haze of nostalgia, rose-colored lenses, but I am totally OK with that and want nothing else.
