A/N Just a very quick ficlet I wrote in a random spurt of inspiration out of nowhere. It's not my best and actually a little depressing (way to sell my story). But anyway, just thought I'd share.

Trigger warning for references to Alzheimer's disease

It starts off with Tiffany misplacing her keys. At first she laughs it off, how silly she was to forget that they had been sitting by the kitchen table all along, on top of the refrigerator or still hanging off the lock.

Then it became more frequent, insidiously so.

“Where are you going?” Yuri catches Tiffany’s arm, with those same keys in her hand.

Tiffany blinks and tears her eyes away from Yuri’s placed hand, lifting her head to answer. “I’m going to- I’m going to- you know- what’s that place where you-.”

Yuri saves her from circling around nothing, saves her own self from the torture of knowing Tiffany will never reply with an answer. “Come here,” she murmurs pulling Tiffany aside away from the door where they had been standing behind.

It should bother her more for Tiffany’s sake as she pries the keys away from Tiffany's hand and places them into the back pocket of her jeans, but Yuri doesn’t worry for the day Tiffany forgets her own name, or that the colour to describe the sky is blue.

Yuri sits Tiffany down on her couch and turns on the television. “Is there anything I can get you?” Yuri asks, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Tiffany’s ear.

Tiffany smiles and shakes her head and her attention switches to the moving images on the television screen.

Yuri resigns, leaning her head against Tiffany’s shoulder, listens to the murmurs of her thrumming heart and quietly watches the soft rise and fall of her chest.

Yuri dreads for that day where the beating will stop and Tiffany eventually forgets how to breathe.
