He wakes up in motion and nearly throws up all over himself. He turns to the side and hacks up a nasty string of saliva. Now that he thinks about it, he doesn't remember when he last ate. The movement stops and Sam realises he's stretched out on something like a sled, wedged between tin cans and ammo.
Someone trudges over and Sam peers up blearily until the face comes into focus.
"Bobby?"
"Yeah," Bobby replies, pulling the cloth away from the lower half of his face. "You think you can walk now? Because I ain't pulling you any further."
Sam lets him help him to his feet. It's strange, to look at someone you loved so much and know it isn't really them. He wants to hug this man, but this man probably doesn't want to hug him.
"Guess you didn't get back to your world, then," Bobby says, shrugging. "Well, welcome to paradise."
"You saved me," Sam says. "You - you don't even know me."
Bobby shrugs again. "Ain't many humans left. Besides, you've been here five minutes and already got your ass kicked. Figured you could use some help."
"Thanks. Really."
"Don't mention it. Look... what was your name again?"
That feels like a kick in the chest. "It's Sam."
"Sam, I don't really work well with others. I thought I'd wait until you were okay to get on your feet... this is where we part ways."
He picks up his sled, carrying on his way before he's finished speaking, not pausing to say goodbey. Sam thinks of this dry, grey, lifeless hellscape, and he thinks of being alone in it. He thinks of Dean and his Mom being so far away. And Cas... God. Sam can't be alone. Not again.
"Wait," he shouts, jogging to catch up. "Please."
Bobby pauses and raises an eyebrow at him.
"I can fight," Sam says. "I've killed three white-eyed demons in my world, I even took down Lucifer."
"Thought he's still alive where you are."
"He is," Sam admits. "But I locked him away. That's why my world doesn't look like yours. But he's out now, here, and he's after me."
Bobby doesn't look impressed. "Didn't do such a good job then, did you?" he says.
Sam's teeth grind together. He pulls Ruby's knife from his belt and holds it up. "This can kill demons. I can kill demons."
"I didn't ask for your resume," Bobby says.
Sam sighs. "I'm just saying, I can be useful to you. I can watch your back. You can trust me."
"Oh, can I?"
Bobby stares at him, waiting for an answer. Sam can only think of the truth. "You're like a father to me. Where I come from, I mean. You were family."
Bobby looks him up and down for a minute, like he's trying to spy any cracks in a facade. After a moment, he says, "Fine. You can stick with me for a while, just keep any of that sappy crap about the other me to yourself. You said the other Lucifer is here following you?"
Sam nods.
For the first time, a grin spreads across Bobby's face and he pats the gun strapped to his shoulder. "Always wanted to kill an archangel. Come on, then, kid."

Thanks so much! I'm relieved to hear you like it, I was feeling a little unsure about it as I posted it. It didn't turn out how I imagined it in my head. Even so, I quite like the idea of Sam and AU!Bobby having adventures together.

TBC, right? I love the idea of Sam building something new with AU Bobby, and that AU Bobby is even crustier than our Bobby. Who'd have thought that was even possible? LOL
