Um I ended up not liking this so much once I'd finished it. But it's written, might as well post. Hope you like it anyway!
.
Falling isn't the same as the last time. Last time was a slow descent, a seemingly endless drop down to the deepest reach of hell. It was planned, it was terrifying, but the importance of it kept him going for centuries. That fall had ended in a way that cracked his bones and broke his skin and ripped the devil from his body. That fall killed him.

This time, Sam has his feet on solid ground, his brother and mother right behind him, then he's pulled into the cold, grey wasteland, the door sewing shut behind him. He goes crashing into the dirt, dust flying up around him, catching his eyes and making them water. He clenches his fist around the knuckle rings and lifts his head.

Lucifer is screaming, and when his eyes catch Sam they turn red with fury. Sam doesn't think, he runs.

He doesn't get far, of course. Lucifer still has his wings, he catches Sam before he really gets going, curls his fists into Sam's jacket and yanks him up. Sam chokes, fingers pulling at Lucifer's cold hands. The touch of it is like a shock, the sting of a memory he could never force himself to forget.

Most people think I burn hot. It's actually quite the opposite.

"Just you and me again, Sammy," Lucifer says, close enough that Sam can almost feel his lips touching his cheek. "Just like old times."

"Don't touch me!" Sam shouts, kicking out as hard as he can. Lucifer lets go, drops him to the ground hard enough to hurt.

"Always the prude," Lucifer mutters, rolling his eyes. "You know better than anyone I could kill you like that." He snaps his fingers. "But my boy's on the other side of that rift, and as much as I want to squash you into the dirt like the maggot you are - "

Sam doesn't let him finish, he clenches his fist around the knuckle rings and lets his fist fly. Lucifer is knocked back a couple of steps, and Sam scrambles to his feet and runs. He gets a little further this time, turning a corner around the remains of a church before running right into the devil himself. If it's possible, he looks angrier than before.

He flicks his wrist and Sam hits the ground a few meters away before he even manages to process his feet leaving the ground in the first place. As Lucifer draws close, Sam wonders if this world has a God, too. But the place is dried up and lifeless, like it's been flayed. If there is a God, he cares even less than the one back home.

The sky splits open then and angels come raining down on them like meteors crashing to earth. Lucifer looks away, and that's all Sam needs before he's running again. He can hear the bright rage of angels murdering each other behind him, and he hits the ground faster.

He's not sure how long it's been. There's no night or day here, and whatever's left of the sun hangs high in the sky endlessly, hot enough to burn his exposed skin. Sam's feet are turning numb, his legs getting heavier and heavier as his stomach cramps with hunger. He rubs his hand under his shirt, feels the flatness of his belly as it growls to be fed. He feels at his ribs, wonders if he can make out the markings etched there.

Lucifer can't find Sam as quickly if he didn't see which way he went.

He needs to rest, he needs to keep moving. He pauses, contemplating taking a break for a moment, when something moves at the top of the valley, sending a stream of rubble tumbling down to him. He stops breathing for a moment. He found me he found me he found me

Something else comes hurtling down towards him, and he's so relieved it isn't Lucifer that he forgets a little too late to draw Ruby's knife. It's a demon, the black eyes are a dead giveaway, but the horns are definitely new. It barrels into him, sending him into the ground and pinning him there. It swipes him across the cheek with sharp claws.

Sam manages to buck it off, pulling the knife from his belt, and he's ready this time when it comes for him. He spears it in the chest and watches orange flicker under its skin as it dies. He's out of breath by the end, cheek throbbing with stinging pain. He feels the wound and hisses, fingers coming away with fresh blood.

Everything tilts for a second and Sam puts his hand out to steady himself, but there's nothing. He drops heavily to his knees, exhausted and starving and in pain. He tries, he really does, but the next thing he knows he's got a face full of dirt and everything is blurring together.

He wakes up in motion and nearly throws up all over himself. He turns to the side and hacks up a nasty string of saliva. Now that he thinks about it, he doesn't remember when he last ate. The movement stops and Sam realises he's stretched out on something like a sled, wedged between tin cans and ammo.

Someone trudges over and Sam peers up blearily until the face comes into focus.

"Bobby?"

"Yeah," Bobby replies, pulling the cloth away from the lower half of his face. "You think you can walk now? Because I ain't pulling you any further."

Sam lets him help him to his feet. It's strange, to look at someone you loved so much and know it isn't really them. He wants to hug this man, but this man probably doesn't want to hug him.

"Guess you didn't get back to your world, then," Bobby says, shrugging. "Well, welcome to paradise."

"You saved me," Sam says. "You - you don't even know me."

Bobby shrugs again. "Ain't many humans left. Besides, you've been here five minutes and already got your ass kicked. Figured you could use some help."

"Thanks. Really."

"Don't mention it. Look... what was your name again?"

That feels like a kick in the chest. "It's Sam."

"Sam, I don't really work well with others. I thought I'd wait until you were okay to get on your feet... this is where we part ways."

He picks up his sled, carrying on his way before he's finished speaking, not pausing to say goodbey. Sam thinks of this dry, grey, lifeless hellscape, and he thinks of being alone in it. He thinks of Dean and his Mom being so far away. And Cas... God. Sam can't be alone. Not again.

"Wait," he shouts, jogging to catch up. "Please."

Bobby pauses and raises an eyebrow at him.

"I can fight," Sam says. "I've killed three white-eyed demons in my world, I even took down Lucifer."

"Thought he's still alive where you are."

"He is," Sam admits. "But I locked him away. That's why my world doesn't look like yours. But he's out now, here, and he's after me."

Bobby doesn't look impressed. "Didn't do such a good job then, did you?" he says.

Sam's teeth grind together. He pulls Ruby's knife from his belt and holds it up. "This can kill demons. I can kill demons."

"I didn't ask for your resume," Bobby says.

Sam sighs. "I'm just saying, I can be useful to you. I can watch your back. You can trust me."

"Oh, can I?"

Bobby stares at him, waiting for an answer. Sam can only think of the truth. "You're like a father to me. Where I come from, I mean. You were family."

Bobby looks him up and down for a minute, like he's trying to spy any cracks in a facade. After a moment, he says, "Fine. You can stick with me for a while, just keep any of that sappy crap about the other me to yourself. You said the other Lucifer is here following you?"

Sam nods.

For the first time, a grin spreads across Bobby's face and he pats the gun strapped to his shoulder. "Always wanted to kill an archangel. Come on, then, kid."

Thanks so much! I'm relieved to hear you like it, I was feeling a little unsure about it as I posted it. It didn't turn out how I imagined it in my head. Even so, I quite like the idea of Sam and AU!Bobby having adventures together.

TBC, right? I love the idea of Sam building something new with AU Bobby, and that AU Bobby is even crustier than our Bobby. Who'd have thought that was even possible? LOL

Sam and AU Bobby would have a very interesting relationship indeed! Now I just need regular Bobby to meet his AU self
