I understood how I Saw the TV Glow would be important and powerful to transpeople, but as someone who is cis, it did not strike me as anything other than a visually well-made movie with a lot of millennial nostalgia. And that's fine - not all movies need to be made for all people, but I am happy for people who felt seen by this movie.

Yeah the movie wasn't for me, but I thought it was beautifully shot with a great soundtrack.

I came in here to say this! I thought I would love it, but left feeling ambivalent.

Same. I thought I totally got it, but then I read what it was really about, and I was completely wrong lol

I didn't get it either. Someone explained it to me and then I was like oh ok cool. I get it now. I fell asleep watching it, but maybe I should try again.

I got all the Buffy references though. Instantly.

i tried to see it through the lens of my trans friends and conversations i’d had with them and it made way more sense

I'm not trans myself, but a lot of my friends are - we all loved it. The trans/queer allegory is quite obvious, but it's also about how scary it is to be yourself/be the person you needed when you were younger, and how equally scary it is to live a life that just happens to you, while slowly suffocating under the pressure to perform for others. The 90s references are because some of those old shows (Buffy especially) offered a glimpse at a different way to be or another way to look at the world.

It's a film that will definitely resonate more with some than others though, and is probably pretty boring if these aren't things you've worried about.

Here's a well-written article about it.
