Tbh I’m less surprised by a director like Christopher Nolan wanting Zendaya for his film, since she’s an it girl right now with two Emmys and a fanbase, than I am about him wanting Tom Holland who hasn’t had the greatest resume outside of Spider-Man looolll

he's wanted to work with tom for years. there were rumors for both dunkirk and oppenheimer that he offered tom a role but he couldn't do either because of schedule conflicts

True! Zendaya's films have been better received than his. I mostly was surprised by Zendaya cause she's not the greatest of actress and her range seems pretty limited. I think with more roles she can improve but I'm also not expecting a huge range to develop either.

But it's strategic on her part getting all this big budget films on one hand it increases her visibility but I don't think it helps improves her acting skills cause more talented actors can run circles around her. I noticed this in Challengers which she was good but Josh and Mike did better and it's not like any of them had to really stretch those acting muscles. Even Dune I thought Rebecca was the best actor but even though Timmy was decent I kept thinking Denis made some choices with Z's facial expressions.

I feel like she should do indies or something more lowkey where you have to flex those muscles cause big budget films aren't supposed to be films where you're expected to deliver masterpieces (at least not now compared to maybe 20-30 years ago).

The thing about Christopher Nolan’s films, at least until Oppenheimer, was that they never did very much for anyone’s acting career. I assume you get a nice paycheck and obviously you get a lot of visibility, but with the exception of Oppenheimer no one really gets a chance to show off their acting skills or gets acting nominations or anything like that. And it’s even worse for his actresses. Even though Emily Blunt managed an Oscar nomination, her character wasn’t that well written ( ... )

Good point about Nolan! The other thing is most of films are now ensemble casts so you actually have to have some talent to stand out amongst the pack. It's a shame he doesn't do smaller stuff like Memento which I think is his best film. Anne I think is more concentrated on just working and maybe being seen as a better actor cause her Oscar win and Les Mis in general was NOT IT ( ... )

She definitely did it to break out of the Disney/teen roles. I love Challengers a lot, but I agree Tashi was severely underwritten. I enjoyed her in the role because of her chemistry with Mike and Josh, but Tashi deserved more meat because she was the most interesting to me out of them all.

Agree with you wrt Zendaya needs to challenge herself. You speak no lies, 10/10, no notes.

Memento is like the only Nolan movie I haven’t yet seen lol, I need to get to that. But yeah, I knew the second I saw Oppenheimer Cillian Murphy was winning, but I remember people on the awards prediction sites refused to believe it until he started winning awards because “no one wins awards for Nolan movies.” I guess we’ll see how this new movie goes but I would be surprised if anyone got acting notices for it because Oppenheimer was the exception ( ... )

I had a feeling Cillian would win and it seemed to be a weak year. But I figured he'd win cause Cillian had been long accepted a good actor so that's play into his campaign. Plus he had RDJr in his team which helped a lot since Robert already had his long overdue narrative set in place ( ... )

You would be surprised, people on awardsworthy and goldderby spent months hating on Cillian and calling him a bad actor because I think a lot of them wanted Bradley Cooper to win lol. I don’t like Bradley but I don’t hate him either but I also don’t understand why they were talking about Bradley like he’s a thespian who’s owed an Oscar ( ... )

Bradley never had a chance, granted I would've picked him for A Star is Born over Rami for Bohemian Rhapsody. I love me some Rami but I'll never understand how that glorified vh1 film got so far as to OSCARS ( ... )

I'm not.
Tom has been in non-MCU movies with Nolan actors like Cillian Murphy, Robert Pattinson and Tom Hardy iirc. Plus obviously with RDJ in the MCU. So if Nolan watched these actors' filmographies like he said he did, he saw Tom a few times too.
Also, Tom has range. If Nolan watches everything, he saw Tom in period pieces, Tom in small British indies, Tom in action movies, etc.

I haven’t seen him much outside of Spider-Man tbh. What non-MCU films of his are your faves that you would recommend?

I'd say The Impossible, The Devil All The Time and The Crowded Room. The last one is too long for its own good (hence the reviews) but the second half's acting is amazing.
