The women of Emilia Pérez (and director Jacques Audiard) continue to attend festivals and do press for their film. Earlier this week, they were in the Bay Area for the Mill Valley Film Festival, were in NYC, and now they're in London for the BFI London Film Festival ( Read more... )

There's a lot of terrible fashion. I do like the keyhole design on Selena's dress.

Never noticed Zoe's arm tattoo!

I read the comments before scrolling up to see the fashion and you’re not kidding!

as an aside, I read some reviews and some spoilers of the movie and lol, this movie is so going to be the villain of this upcoming awards season. It’s the kind of the film that does well with the well meaning but clueless white liberals of the Academy who will feel like they’re advocating for representation, but it’s already getting ripped apart by Mexican and transgender critics for being problematic. ONTD is going to hate it, mark my words.

still rooting for Selener though 😍

I'm interested in seeing it but I have been surprised that's a contender for some reason but I'm not surprised by the villain narrative (although maybe some other films like Sept 5 should have that spot). Hmm I didn't know about the mexican and trans community picking it apart.

I'm happy for Zoe that she's apparently the frontrunner for BSA but I was kinda laughing at people saying Selena could also get a nom. No shade but if Selena manages to get a nom it is 100% on goodwill lol. I like her but girl is weak when it comes to acting. On the other hand it would be kinda cute to see be an Oscar nominee as laughable as it is loooool.

I can already imagine the ONTD posts about the movie in my head lol. [Spoiler (click to open)]The Mexican critics were upset that the eponymous character is the head of a drug cartel who causes hundreds of thousands of deaths and then transitions to start a new life and never faces any accountability for her past life as the head of a drug cartel. They accused the film of taking cartel violence too lightly and also were upset the cast doesn’t include more Mexicans. The transgender critics were also upset that the film depicted the Emilia Pérez character as two completely different people pre and post surgery, as opposed to the same person who just got a surgery. Apparently the pre surgery Emilia is just a walking man stereotype and the post surgery Emilia is just a walking woman stereotype. The film also shows the surgery in great detail apparently.I think the film will do fine at the Oscars just like Green Book lol but it’s going to be the topic of so many thinkpieces and become the awards season villain for Film Twitter. Zoe will be fine and Selena will be ( ... )

Oh I am bucking up now in anticipation for the thinkpieces and the defense from the cast loooooool!!

Selena is not a fluent speaker so that's not surprising. She was kinda apologizing at Cannes for her Spanish not being the greatest but I'm like "you know.....if you wanna improve your Spanish if it bothers you that much, you could always hire a private tutor to ease you into", but I figured she's not around a lot of latinos/environment that make her feel the need to that. Also I think Selena being open about her insecurities or shortcoming is pretty much part of her brand now so I think she's gotten use to the self-deprecating and kinda poor me/pity me persona so she's not gonna do things to publicly fix that cause it gets her goodwill.

I guess we’ll see how it plays out but I don’t think the cast is going to be the object of the backlash, probably mainly the white male French director lol. That said, said white male French director is also very much one of those prestige arthouse directors who has been making critically acclaimed films in Europe for a long time and this is his first attempt to make a Hollywood film, so he’ll have his defenders from fans of his previous films too. It’s the perfect recipe for a disaster lol. I see it going farther and farther with awards shows (I think the only awards show that won’t like the film is BAFTA lol) while the backlash gets stronger and stronger from the media and social media so Hollywood just doubles down ( ... )

Most lists I’ve been seeing are listing Selena as third actually. On the Oscar race subreddit she’s considered almost a lock, surprisingly.

She’s hustling and campaigning so much that I’m more inclined to say that she’s going to make it than not, honestly.

Yeah as long as her performance is passable, I feel like she has enough clout and connections in the industry now she’ll probably make it.
