Mmm Luca Marinelli.

But I'll be honest - I really liked the first one, it was one of the few things that managed to spark joy during the Summer of COVID and Unrest, but my interest in a sequel plummeted when Gina Prince-Bythewood left the project. I think the movie was better than it had any right to be in large part because of her.

oh damn, i've been super excited about a sequel and i had just assumed she was returning. i wonder why. gina's amazing so i'm sure her loss will be felt, but i'm glad they at least replaced her with another black female director, instead of a male director, which hollywood has done with sequels to successful films.

AFAIK it was because she was doing The Woman King (which came out actually around the same time the old guard 2 wrapped), but she's still a producer on the sequel.

At the time it came out, it was a top 10 all-time Netflix original movie. I know Netflix did have an executive shift in early 2023, and that the new guy wants to make content for "more audiences" or some bullshit like that, which always made me wonder if the new guy wants to pander more to middle America and The Old Guard was a target because, as one right-wing reviewer called it, it was "too woke" (it came out when that was first becoming an insult).

I mean, yes there was a gay kiss between a interracial interreligious pseudo-immortal couple, but it was obviously two straight guys kissing, that barely counts.
