That's not going to be easy. Breaking off a contract is very hard. Those idol contracts are pretty iron clad and most of the companies would rather just put an idol or the group in the dungeon than letting them go. And the courts usually side with the companies because the bigger ones have ties to the government. tbh I can only really think about Hyuna and Dawn when thinking about people who successfully left a big company.

I mean, look at what SM did to EXO's China Line. They kept them in court forever and then they only settled(?) by having to pay a pretty hefty percentage of all their solo stuff. I want to say they even took Tao (?) back to court at one point because they thought he hadn't paid enough to them or was not paying it back properly.

Or even look how Attrakt recently ruined the girls who left Fifty Fifty recently. NJ's does have it better than Fifty Fifty, because at least the public has been rational with them and see they have been abused by both Hybe and MHJ. But I still see Hybe being petty betties and keeping them locked in and sidelined.

This is the part that makes me wonder how many NewJeans fans are new kpop fans vs fans who have been around for more than a few years. Groups get shelved (or stuck in the basement) all the damn time. Fromis_9 was shelved for over a year before their recent comeback (something that only happened because the group and fans fought for it). A lot of the arguments from people online (not necessarily here but on Reddit, etc.) in favour of NewJeans being able to break their contracts come off as very naive when you look at the kpop industry as a whole. The intentions are good, but the reality is very different from what people seem to be imagining.

Also, the HYBE executives are absolutely petty enough to stick NewJeans in a basement for the rest of their contracts (by which point NewJeans's position in the kpop market would have likely been filled by another group, albeit not likely a HYBE one). They've got just under five years left (assuming the typical 7 year contract). Unless MHJ did something different with their contracts, they're unlikely to have some sort of "minimum yearly required promotions" clause in theirs and without something like that HYBE can absolutely wait them out, even if it costs them money. It's all personal to these adults, they'll cut off their noses to spite their face in an instant.
