Honestly. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice....

This is the second time he's given HBO the rights to his work. And we all know what happened the first time.

You don't want them to ruin your story? Then don't take their money. He's happy to cash the checks and then whine online when things don't go his way.

I think this is different. asoiaf is unfinished. GRRM told HBO he'd keep ahead of the show (when they started the show 5 books were already out) so the show would have a completed book series to adapt just like how when the HP movies started coming out not all the books were completed, but Rowling got her books published before the movies caught up.

With F&B the full story is there. So we know all the events, the ending, etc... and they just needed to adapt that. They didn't have the challenge of GoT where they ran out of source material & had no idea how to end things.

But D&D started messing up with the characters/story even before they ran out of books.
I remember one of the actors was looking forward to more screen time because of his storyline in the novels, but the creators decided to kill him anyway.

I just think George knows exactly who he's dealing with. And he sold it anyway.

Barriston Selmy. He's alive last we saw him in the book but who knows if Martin plans to kill him off or not.

I have my issues with GoT for sure, but think HotD is worse in large part because they have completed material.

Yeah but I think most of those GOT earlier changes he could live with since they didn’t substantially change the story or the main themes. He knows you can’t adapt a book to a visual medium live movies or tv 1-for-1.

His main complaint seems to be they’re making substantial changes and for no good reason.

That being said, this is the nature of adaption. He’s been a script writer before, he should have demanded more control from HBO if this was that important to him. It’s not like he’s actually writing the last GOT books.
