From what I've read about the case, it probably was MOSTLY innocent - HP just regretted their poor business decisions later and fired the exec who approved the deal 5 weeks after he signed off on it. HP vetted his company poorly and regretted it later. People expected since he was found guilty in a civil suit in the UK, he'd be guilty in the US, but nope, he was acquitted. In 2023, the British judge found him liable for civil fraud in the matter, and in a separate trial, one of his co-conspirators was found guilty and I believe sentenced to five years in prison. It was a surprise that he was acquitted in the SF trial, most experts thought he would be found guilty, regardless of HP's vetting or lack of vetting the deal.
