I'm approaching 40 and I'm so not looking forward to mammograms (but I'll do it!) I was so relieved when my doctor said my next pap smear was next year, not this year. I seriously want to know why women's healthcare is so barbaric.

Apparently you can wait a few yrs for a pap smear if you’re low risk, that’s what my dr told me. No clue what that means.

Because it was designed by men (using research based on unconsenting female slave’s bodies), who perpetuated myths like “the cervix feels no pain”, is immensely unfunded, and also serves as a means of control by removing women’s agency over their bodies and lives, so largely sexist (and often misogynistic) societies and cultures have no interest in changing up the status quo as long as it keeps men in power and women at home.

But men get given fistfuls of dick pills and all the analgesia they want.

Rant over. I had an IUD fitted earlier this year and I’m still bitter as hell about the whole experience.

Don’t even get me started. I had three IUD removal attempts (the strings were coiled up, so no one could pull it out). Each time, I was on the table screaming out in pain in a constant flood of tears waiting for them to blindly fish around for it, using a tool as long as as my forearm.

It wasn’t until I was referred to an OB who took one look up my cervix and said “nope, I’ll see you in my OR” that I was finally given an option besides Tylenol for the pain.

Jesus fucking Christ that’s BARBARIC. I'm so sorry you went through that.

My insertion went pretty smoothly. Other than the fact they tried the cheaper IUD first which was too big for my tiny womb, so I basically had to have 2 insertions when they tried again with the smaller one.

Getting stabbed in the uterus 3/4 times was not a fun way to start my day, or my perimenopause journey. Dreading getting it removed, considering they basically just have to yank it out with its arms extended.

Getting it removed my first time was not bad at all! I still recommend it to everyone, it just sucks when something goes wrong.

That’s good to hear! And generally I would also recommend it based on the contraceptive and period-controlling properties. But the whole method of insertion is just so invasive and painful. It’s a shame that we have to go through that bit (without any pain relief) to get the benefit.

Improved tech plus the time it takes cervical cancer to develop makes it so that there's not much difference in diagnosis/survival rates between annual or 3 year checks for certain age groups.

My mom talked about them as if they were terrible so much that when I finally got one it was not a big deal.
