Scarlet Begonia being Rachel Zoe's favourite girl name is something I think about a lot.

I was re-reading Anne of the Island and one of Anne's protagonist is named Averil Lester. I kinda love this creative spelling of Avril 😅

Honestly, L.M. Montgomery had a talent for choosing names like Cordelia and Lavender Lewis but then she considers Bertha to be an equally beautiful name

tbh I don't think LM Montgomery herself actually thought 'Bertha' was a beautiful name, she just has Rilla think that the way tween Anne thought that 'Averil' was a perfect name for her protagonist 😅 iirc she was named after Anne's mother so in-text they're obv not going to diss the name

(note how no LMM heroine or heroine's bff actualy has a name like Bertha or Averil, they're Diana, Priscilla, Ilse, Valancy etc)

Rilla was named after Marilla, Anne's adoptive mother figure, and Bertha was the name of Anne's birth mother, which is probably why Rilla romanticised it so.

Loving this conversation <3

Edit: that read a little passive aggressive using discourse 😳 I actually love your insight.

To be fair, Bertha is such a beautiful name for a pet chicken.
