is anything from this album doing well?

are people just too disgusted by her relationship to compartmentalize?

That is such a loaded comment. No good answer here

If someone answers "no, I do not like the album" is it because they are not being able to compartmentalize and the album is good?

editing because my first reply sounded like I was attacking OP and I am not, sorry

The album hasn’t actually done too bad. It’s successful by standard metrics (still in the top 10 albums this year) - but she definitely hasn’t had the chart dominance or that ubiquity in pop culture presence she enjoyed several years ago

Personally I thought this album was kinda meh compared to her previous efforts.

i like this album but i will admit that i hardly listen to it because it feels a bit phony? like it's trying to be this bittersweet album but there's not real vulnerability in it. even with all its own messiness, thank u next feels more "real" to her emotions and what she was experiencing, this one just feels like she's trying to paint a picture instead of showing us her true state of mind. also, i find her visuals too repetitive and it bores me. she always seems to want to come off as THE most sexy to men and it kinda turns me off of her

Same! I've seen more criticisms about how flat the album feels and how the production choices were largely safe and/or boring than I have of her relationship.

I think sweetener is her best work by far, and I liked ES more than positions but lyrically she’s not really a good songwriter. I think there’s only one lyric I thought was pretty engaging in wait for your love, which is probs the best song on the album, and even that is largely due to it being an almost shameless recreation of dancing on my own.

I think, in theory, she’d have a lot to say about her divorce and new relationship but her songwriting skills / her need to look good or “just” in her decision making is holding her back

I don't mind what I've heard of it but I honestly could not tell you if I've actually heard the whole thing. I kind of wander off partway through. I did like "we can't be friends".

Not a stan, but overthinking this as a result of your comment: [Spoiler (click to open)]I think the messiness of her relationship has definitely put off some casual listeners, but I do think the album itself was fairly well received. The messiness of TTPD coming out the month after Ariana's album put a damper on any sort of long term chart domination, but also made Ariana seem a bit better in comparison (from my vantage point as a casual listener). Ethan was the one who chose to break up his family, while Ariana has kept her own relationship ending relatively private (aside from exploring it on this album, but even then it's more introspective rather than antagonistic). She's not blameless but I think over time more people are acknowledging that a man can't actually be stolen, he can only choose to leave. It's been out for a few months, though, and between Taylor Swift's unending ... )

The streams are consistent. It’s still in the top 20 on Billboard Top 200, and she just sold out on some physical CD copies from her website so once those ship she’ll probably re-enter the top 10.

“We Can’t Be Friends” gets decent streams and airplay, and has reached new peaks in various charts (Pop Radio, AC, etc). “The Boy Is Mine” is going to re-enter the Hot 100 due to the video, and this remix will help it move up further after that.

Overall the project is performing pretty stable for her.

wcbf was a solid hit for her, while not being massive like some of her previous smashes

the album itself is doing... fine

The album has done well. WCBF is a hit on streaming. Her team sucks though and didn't play the game for radio otherwise would have done better.
