Not a stan, but overthinking this as a result of your comment: [Spoiler (click to open)]I think the messiness of her relationship has definitely put off some casual listeners, but I do think the album itself was fairly well received. The messiness of TTPD coming out the month after Ariana's album put a damper on any sort of long term chart domination, but also made Ariana seem a bit better in comparison (from my vantage point as a casual listener). Ethan was the one who chose to break up his family, while Ariana has kept her own relationship ending relatively private (aside from exploring it on this album, but even then it's more introspective rather than antagonistic). She's not blameless but I think over time more people are acknowledging that a man can't actually be stolen, he can only choose to leave. It's been out for a few months, though, and between Taylor Swift's unending chart manipulation and new releases from Billie and Sabrina, too much is eating up attention right now for "the boy is mine" to be charting with any significance. "we can't be friends" did pretty well, though, and the negative reactions to "yes, and?" had cooled off by the time the actual album dropped. So while I don't think there will be long term hits off this album (like she's had from other albums), I think her approach (between the album and her low-key dating life with Ethan) is keeping her relatively safe from significant and/or sustained blow back.
Or maybe I'm actually talking shit as someone on the outside looking in.
