It's bizarre, and it gives me war flashbacks to Abbie/Ichabod from Sleepy Hollow tbh.

Like if Ayo and Molly Gordon (or literally any other white actress) switched roles, would we have all this discourse? I'm thinking no.

i couldn't STAND her character until i read, here or on reddit or something, that basically she's just a plot point for carmy's self-discovery. his family pushing her onto him in all the flashbacks and her being the most available person on the planet were just so he could realize that he can't do things just because his family or whoever thinks he should do them. or because they seem like the good and sensible thing to do. doing those things will never be right for him, he's never gonna be that person. we were *supposed* to feel like she drags him down because needed to realize he is headed in a different direction.

the audience's relationship with carmy is so different from his relationship with himself, because he spends so much of his time in his past. dating her was some attempt to reconcile his past and his present which, we as the detached audience, know is not a worthy way to spend his time or energy. he needed to learn that.

I’m not surprised at all by the comments on Reddit (nor here). It’s the same “they’re better off as platonic!”,”they’re more like siblings!” talking points I’ve seen countless times before with other bw/wm ships (ex: Rick/Michonne on TWD, John/Joss on POI, Ichabod/Abbie on Sleepy Hollow like you mentioned). Interesting how I never see this amount of backlash/arguments against a ship when both characters are white.

anyone who's against rick/michonne is insane. rick was so in awe of michonne! i quit the show before they became official, and one of my last major annoyances with the show was how rick got with that blonde lady with the shitty ex-husband once they got to alexandria. richonne should've happened WAY sooner.

Anyone who understands foreshadowing, parallels and subtext in television when it comes to the dynamic between two characters knew that Richonne was going to happen, but personal biases prevented a current demographic of seeing it

They're not BW/WM but Finn/Rey also got slapped with the platonic soulmates/besties for the resties label. Meanwhile two straight white dudes breathe in the same direction in the MCU or on The CW and they're secretly in love and meant to be. It's so transparent.

Exactly. It was made even more transparent when Finn clearly has a crush on Rey in TFA with him asking her if she had a boyfriend. 🙄

eta: apparently Daisy wants John to be a part of her new Star Wars project I heard. Hopefully John agrees and Finnrey can finally happen! Fingers crossed lol 🤞

I think it’s pretty clear that that was the original plan and probably what they also told John was going to happen.

I think it was the plan originally and then Rian steered the relationship towards Reylo and JJ had to go along with it because he probably thought it “wouldn’t make sense” for it to pivot back to Finn and he wanted to stay consistent. Too bad they didn’t care about staying consistent about everything else however!
