Anyone who understands foreshadowing, parallels and subtext in television when it comes to the dynamic between two characters knew that Richonne was going to happen, but personal biases prevented a current demographic of seeing it.

I’m pretty sure they only included that blonde storyline in the show because it’s an “iconic” moment that happens in the comics and that was the goal of the writers - to shock the audience, but it of course didn’t make sense for the story and the character, which is the problem. In universe you can explain it though - Rick saw Supercuts (that’s what I call the blonde lol) as a second Lori (and a woman he had to protect because he was the leader, was a cop and has a hero complex) and because he felt guilty of treating Lori poorly before her demise he saw Supercuts as a “second chance” of protecting Lori. Let’s not forget he (and all the other characters) were suffering from severe PTSD atp in the story as well. He was acting crazy and literally caressing walls (and was still wearing his wedding ring during the whole time he was chasing after said blonde), so he clearly wasn’t in the right state of mind for any romantic and long-term relationship, or anything for that matter. Because if he was in the right state of mind, he WOULD have gotten with Michonne a lot sooner.

I don’t know if you’ve seen TOWL but in it Rick confirms that he knew that he was in love with Michonne before they got together on the couch and he told her, “I didn’t know what to do”. He didn’t specify when exactly he knew his feelings but technically fans can theorize that he knew while he was acting a fool when they got to Alexandria and he didn’t persue Michonne because he didn’t want to ruin his close bond with her if she didn’t feel the same way, and/or didn’t want to jeopardize her close bond with Carl. We will probably never know the reason why that storyline had to happen in the show but looking back on it now it’s not really important because the writing for Richonne has proven that they’re soulmates and that Michonne is “The love of [Rick’s] life”, according to the man himself 😌
