#StarTrek fans have talked a lot about the amount of episodes in a season in the new series. I asked Alex Kurtzman if any Trek series will ever reach 100 episodes again and he broke down the complicated state of streaming for me: https://t.co/ARQKg3Pobn

I mentioned I loved filler eps a few years ago and people were mad, but they were so fun!

Especially because you would get character based eps focusing on a secondary character and it would fill out the scope of the show.

The shorter seasons came out of the golden age of TV when you would really have tight plots and extremely show runner driven shows but network TV used to be fun and messy. It wasn't deep, it was a good fun time.

I got really into season 2 of Bridgerton and that is exactly the type of show that would have benefitted from a 20+ episode season. Draw out the angst, give characters time to be apart so their reconciliations actually mattered, do an ENTIRE ep on a background character. OMG you could have had throw away funny eps of the servants being like "These horny nobles are stupid as hell".

Filler episodes are where the characterization lives.

I would argue that the "golden age" has been over for years and it was during the time when 13-16 episodes were more the norm. A lot of 8 and 8 split seasons. HBO used to have 13 episode seasons as the standard pre-GOT. GOT was really when it all fell apart imo because every show is trying to replicate what they've done and have gotten super event-driven instead of character-driven. Seasons meanwhile have just gotten shorter and shorter.

Also there's been a lot of romanticizing about British shows having like 6-8 episode seasons but like, that's usually out of necessity because of a low budget and only having one or two writers. They wouldn't all be like that if there were other options. lol

Yeah shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad would typically be 13 episodes long, it’s definitely a more recent thing to make streaming shows have seasons as short as just 8-10 episodes

I feel like you need the filler to care about the characters once it gets to the climax.

They go such a long way in developing a world, and that's what gets people hooked. Like part of the appeal of Star Trek is people just wanting to hang out with the characters on the ship and watching wacky things happen to them.

It's gotten so tiring how every show is trying to be prestigious. The characters are so flat and the plot doesn't even benefit because now everything is too rushed.
