The first 10-15 seconds of a song has always determined whether I kept listening. My parents kept the radio on oldies and never channel hopped. Once I expanded my awareness beyond oldies and listened to my own radio I was always looking for a song I liked instead of sticking with one I didn’t. (Why did my parents listen to commercials when the next station had music?!)

ETA: I don’t listen to music nearly as much as I used to.

I still cannot believe (yet I do) that she wrote Tidal as a teenager. What an absolute ICON.

Came here to see if queen Fiona was mentioned, and of course she is!

Her lyrics mean so much to me. She expresses heartbreak, frustration, anger and sadness in such a powerful way.

WRONG!!!!!! Well, if you sit there like a fkin drone and listen to the hot 100 all day, then yes, it's all vapid garbage. But there are still amazingly written songs out there that I still find each and every week. Off the top of my head, The Alternative; Lyn Lapid, 20somethin;Hrishi, Waltz For Sweatpants; Cody Fry, Poetic Vulgarity; d4vd, most of Allie X's last album was lyrically good imo particularly the Milk song, Scenic Route; Sundial is VERY cute too-you want a cute bop, go to that one.

There's a lot of good stuff out there still, you just have to actively pursue it instead of complaining about shit you dont like. Standard rule to life.

Thank you, it baffles me when people are like “music sucks nowadays” when there will always, ALWAYS be amazing creative new music made every day by independent artists

Yeah, good musicians can be found in every era, but when people say that they are referring to popular music.
And I agree, the big artists of today pale in comparison to the big artists from 30-40 years ago. They used to be better singers, better musicians, better writers and better performers.

yeah there are brilliant lyricists out there but you aren't finding them in pop music, that's never where the poetry has been

Everything is made for TikTok and as many streams as possible within an hour nowadays to get the biggest share from Spotify etc at the end of the month. It’s sad really. Songs are even hardly 2.5 minutes anymore and albums like half an hour???

Shakira is the latest offender. What soulless album

And Shakira is a good example because she was once someone who used to write truly beautiful, figurative lyrics in her pre-English years.

laundry service came out when i was in primary school, and i remember listening to oral fixation for the first time and being absolutely shocked she called out the bbc by name in "timor", also a song addressing god for his indifference to human suffering. bb!me didn't know there's songs like that! her work these days is just so toothless, it's sad.

Bro the way I tried to defend her to my white college friends because of course they only knew her English songs lol. Her music in Spanish in the 90s was great
