Fanfic authors are pulling their works and here's why

And it's live! For @WIRED, I wrote about the illegal fanbindings have led to some writers to delete their works recently-and how that connects to the current pull-to-publish wave and the ever-broadening, increasingly contextless sphere of fic readers: https://t.co/qEFk1jspFo

I ALWAYS download the fic I read as soon as they're finished, I've been burned too many times by website disappearing / authors deleting

I downloaded a bunch last time Ao3 was down due to a hack or whatever it was.

Yep! Now I always download fics that I love and reread

I typically download once they've finished, and keep the link just in case someone archives it! I only read super tiny fandoms now, so I don't think anyone will be publishing theirs anytime soon. I'm lucky enough if one gets posted lol

I need to get better about saving fics that are in my Ao3 bookmarks because going through it for re-reads and seeing “This has been deleted, sorry!” sucks. I am going to do that this weekend.

No matter how many times I've been burned....I still won't learn this lesson.

(I've had like 3 fics disappear on my this month)

I downloaded some last week, funny timing at that. I only did it because I ordered a new Kindle and wanted them on it but now I’m really glad I saved them.

Back in the days of dial-up internet, when my connection was much less reliable, I used to download and print fanfic all the time... but nowadays I've become too lazy and take my internet for granted that I can just load ao3 whenever I please.

oh man.... this brings back memories. My teens were 1 dollar an hour dial up where I would copy/paste as much fic into word to read later when I was offline.
