It’s not even a conspiracy theory because it’s true I just want more people to know that like 99% of buttons to cross the street do absolutely nothing

I like the ones around here because they announce that the walk sign is on. It’s like it’s telling me to be patient (and also may help vision-impaired folks as a side benefit).

but standing still when the light doesn't seem to change for ages and not press it makes me feel like a chump!!

When I see people push them after they've been pushed, or push them over and over, all I can think of is the Crocodile Dundee 2 scene where he's taking Jacko around the city and telling him how pushing the button gets you arrested. Then Jacko says, "how will they know?!" Then Mick points at the light and says something about cameras and how they know because they take your photo when you come into the country.... in 1988. LOL

Aren't those not actually designed to change the light, but as an auditory indicator for people who are vision impaired so they can know if it's safe to cross? (IE that's why they say "wait" if the light is red?)

All of the ones in my city just talk, but there’s definitely one in my hometown near the transit center that talks and triggers the light to turn red for people to cross. Maybe that’s part of the 1% of traffic signals!

The ones that directly affect traffic are generally the ones that face streets that are the less busy side of a busy intersection - usually the ones that would normally only be green for a bit to allow the busier side to run smoothly.

Many of them are for that reason. In Canada they've started putting up signs saying this is specifically for vision impaired people because people complain.

In my city we have two kinds of buttons:

1) If the traffic lights flash, it means that they will not change unless a pedestrian/biker presses the button or the sensor can tell that a car is waiting to cross/turn.

2) If the traffic lights don't flash, it means that the flow of traffic will automatically change periodically. However, if you don't press the button the time between traffic changes will be shorter, no indicator will appear to tell you to cross, and no auditory signal will be made for pedestrians who are blind. Pressing the button gives you more time to cross and triggers the visual/auditory signal.

tmi but I think it's a neat system!

There is one, just one, pedestrian light here in Seattle and I PROMISE ON MY LIFE the light WILL NOT turn unless someone presses the button. I have stood at that crosswalk for minutes looking like Booboo the Clown until I pressed the button and it finally turned white. But that's the ONLY crosswalk in the whole damn world I can think of that's like that lol.
