same lol. i think the criticism was overall too harsh imo. so many people were mad that they didn't list the events in order like in the original, but i feel like that's hardly the main point of the song lol

the biggest problem i have with it is that some of the rhymes are kinda lame but more importantly, there was no attempt to make it go in chronological order like the original

so ive never had to hear small town because i didnt want to give jason any clicks, but i saw the lyrics a while ago and every time i see someone mention it i make a game of playing my own version in my head, making it the worst possible song i can think of with zero redeeming qualities. i just heard it the other day in a pat finnerty video and lmao, its worse than anythng i have been cooking up in my head for months and months. its genuinely just the worst piece of crap ive ever heard.

I'm not generally anti-covers, but I genuinely think some songs just need to be barred from them (Fast Car being one of them). Like, you will never match the meaning and connection of the artist's original and no matter how well intentioned you are, you lack the context and the result will be soulless.

I'm pro that cover actually because it gave Tracy Chapman royalty revenues and iirc she might get some award buzz if the song wins any. The original is superior but I'm in favour of anything that leads to bigger audiences discovering it
