Even nice men can suck once they're in a relationship. My ex was my friend first and someone I considered nice, and he ended up cheating on me. There a lot of men who seem nice up until they're in a relationship, and then reveal their true colors and become abusive, even the better men just don't carry their weight in a relationship.

There are decent men out there, but I think that they are out numbered by the ones who suck.

THIS. I know a lot of nice men who are just not good partners. I can only think of four men in my life who are good partners to their female spouses and the ways in which one of them was terrible to his wife the first TEN YEARS of their relationship and the ways in which the other left of trail of broken women on his road to becoming a good partner...yikes!

The two men who did not leave a path of destruction to becoming good partners, my uncle and my cousin, met their wives when they were in high school and early adulthood!

ETA: The biggest problem with good men is that not only are they far and few in between, they seemingly do not spend much time cajoling/encouraging/bullying other men to get it together.

With my ex, I would always see him being a nice and kind person with everyone else, but constantly disrespecting me and never willing to put me first. I told him more than once that I didn't like the way he was treating me, and he always said that he would try to do better than never did. I knew I was being stupid, but I remembered the person who had been my friend and thought he still existed, but really, everything changed as soon as sex was added to our relationship. I'm just glad the woman he left me for only wasted a month on him before dumping him

And I definitely want you to be right and I'm glad you can be soft and hopeful about it. I've had experiences with men I was supposed to be able to trust that don't allow me to be uncynical about them at this stage but I'd love to be proven wrong

The problem is nice men are few and far between and it's methodically safer for us women, queer folk and femme presenting folk to go with the assumption all men are dangerous.

I'm thinking a lot about the poor woman who got bricked in the face for telling a man "no" when he asked for her number. I had a man ask me for mine two months ago, I said no. He left it alone. I was left alone, another woman got bricked. We have no way to tell which man is going to hit us with a brick if we deny giving him our number and that's a problem.
