"They're cute, but they'd be even cuter if she looked younger". It lessens the cuteness, but it doesn't erase it entirely (not saying I agree with this attitude, but it's a reasonable statement to make).

I'm not critizing anyone. I'm reading the comment literally. The word but does negate what comes before it. It's the purpose of the word. It's written text, I can't interpret it any other way than the way it is written.
