If you are Old like me, you probably know Judd Winick as one of the roommates on the third season of The Real World (which most people remember for the endless fights between Puck and Pedro). I think the producers gradually realized that the locals on each season tended to be low key (but coincidentally, the show’s locals were often the older people in the house which was probably another contributing factor). People like Pam, Mo, and Irene still had jobs and things to do besides hang out at the house all day aka less time to get into petty fights with their roommates.

A few months ago, I saw the the SF season was on Hulu so I rewatched the entire season for the first time in ages and one thing I noticed was that they were still allowed to have a tv in the house, which gave them something else to do. I remember in later seasons there was no tv in the house (another way the producers tried to force the roommates to interact). I don’t remember when they got rid of the tv but I definitely remember that during the Back to New York season, the producers had to bring in a tv to let the cast learn about 9/11.

Anyway, I agree that Boston having no locals was a turning point. I think Hawaii was when they realized that alcohol was the key to creating a ton of drama. People drank on previous seasons but I think Hawaii was when the light bulb really went on for the producers. For me, Las Vegas was the nail in the coffin. I’m not opposed to people drinking or hooking up but that season was not amusing to watch.

Yep no TVs either, although I always figured that was more of a sound issue. I know some of the contestants on RPDR have talked about how being so isolated really makes you crazy and take the game way too seriously.
