A few months ago, I saw the the SF season was on Hulu so I rewatched the entire season for the first time in ages and one thing I noticed was that they were still allowed to have a tv in the house, which gave them something else to do. I remember in later seasons there was no tv in the house (another way the producers tried to force the roommates to interact). I don’t remember when they got rid of the tv but I definitely remember that during the Back to New York season, the producers had to bring in a tv to let the cast learn about 9/11.
Anyway, I agree that Boston having no locals was a turning point. I think Hawaii was when they realized that alcohol was the key to creating a ton of drama. People drank on previous seasons but I think Hawaii was when the light bulb really went on for the producers. For me, Las Vegas was the nail in the coffin. I’m not opposed to people drinking or hooking up but that season was not amusing to watch.
