Mostly the men. Hell, they don't even need the help.

I don't think so. I don't think everyone is capable of being that awful.

I think everyone is capable of being that awful, so often I find myself thinking to make the immoral choice is so much easier. I think many people are capable of recognising right from wrong and choosing not to be awful.

idk I think there's layers to it and what he did was so, so calculated and malicious and repetitive that while we can be conditioned to act in evil ways, he's a different breed if that makes sense

Sure. Some people are truly genuinely evil. I suppose I consider there to be levels of awful and many people are capable of the type of awful they wouldn’t demonstrate in their everyday lives, just because of consequences. Being a rockstar is its own set of privileges and power that enables far more awful than your average Joe and his misogyny

ia and I think it's a spectrum! but yeah, sadly, some people just lack empathy and genuinely enjoy hurting others and need no prompting

I think Manson is one of those

I don't really believe that and I'm saying that as a pessimist.

We know that unchecked power and wealth corrupt, leading to diminished empathy, but I don't believe that everybody has the capacity or predilection for this kind of behaviour. Certainly, there are a lot of covert psychos out there who dream of being able to inflict abuse on others (especially men who feel they've been wronged by the universe), but I still have enough hope in humanity to doubt that the majority would take this route given the chance.

Yeah, as a fellow pessimist, I agree. I think wealth does corrupt, often, but there's also an element of selection bias. The people who attain wealth and power are often able to rise that high because they have a lack of empathy and ethics. Better people dip out at some point when they realize what that level of success is going to ask of them.

I don't want to put it out there, but I can think of several female celebrities who are almost if not entirely universally loved and there aren't murmurings about them being terrible.

Idk about that. A lot of men don't have power and admiration (outside basic male privilege) and they are still awful pieces of shit.
