OT how was Close Encounters on the big screen? I rewatched it recently and mostly liked it: the tension is amped up in an almost surgical way. But the female characters are mainly stereotypes which really bugged me this time around.

I thought it looked and sounded amazing on the big screen! It was a lot more epic feeling than I expected, and I agree, the way the tension is slowly amped up throughout is excellent. And holy shit, you can really see the influence from this film in a lot of subsequent work up through today - for example, I thought of Nope several times.

I didn't want to say much re spoilers and in case you didn't see it. Teri Garr is always terrific - and you're right it wasn't really about characterization, for anyone.

Interesting re interview and different choices with a new perspective.

One thing I love about movies like this is the realism, people just living their lives, mundane, working, having breakfast and then BAM! Everything changes! 🤣
