I am not handwaving anything away. I am coming from a place that understands mindy’s confusion growing up indian in white spaces. And I don’t agree with that article at all. Never have I ever has always been about dealing with grief, trying to reconcile two conflicting cultures and learning to love oneself. Devi is a teen. She is going to be self centred loud and wrong. The mindy project was literally mindy kaling creating a show for herself and late night wasn’t just about mindy’s character but emma thompson’s character as well and how hard it is to break into comedy as women.

hell, i understand how hard and isolating it is to navigate mostly white spaces, too. i’m not saying those stories should not be told. but at some point when it’s the focus of every project it stops looking like “this is me writing directly from my personal frame of reference, nothing more” and looks more “this is internalized racism and/or being in unconscious competition with other woc” and it’s the latter that bothers me, which is what got to me about late night. you can illustrate the homogenous reality of that setting without uncritically reflecting it with the types of supporting characters allowed screentime and emotional growth. but you said she’s improved with her other show, so that’s heartening.

Correct me if I'm wrong because it's been a long time since I watched it, from what I remember about The Mindy Project, in the first few episodes she had a group of female friends who suddenly vanished and the show became mostly about Mindy and guys. I remember Anna Camp played her best friend, maybe she left for another project.
