-Velma is set to premiere later this week on Jan 12th and the review embargo has been lifted.
-The first 8/10 episodes were given to critics and it's a mixed bag of some loving it and some wishing it lived up to its potential.
-EW has given the show a C while notating that it becomes rather generic in its views of the characters - Daphne the mean girl who deals drugs, Fred the rich white boy with a micro pencil stick for a d...., and a friendzoned "Shaggy"
-The jokes are very on the nose "Daphne declares she was "baptized on the set of Ellen."
-It comes as across as very Riverdale in its interpretation of the Scooby mythos
We got to watch HBO Max new series ‘VELMA’ and… it was actually good? I was genuinely surprised, the story is good, great jokes and a mystery with a very smart plot, it’s definitely a nice time for every Scooby-Doo OLD fan…

-Voice acting is one of its strongest bright spots

Raunchy humor and some smart story beats make Velma a genuinely fun ride for the most part, but it would have been elevated to must-watch status had it gone in a different direction with the glasses-wearing star.
