If I was Beanie I would be incredibly hurt by this tbh. I understand that this situation has popped up before but literally not since she was one (or less idk how old she actually is) years old. Idk this is grimy if you thought she couldn’t sing the part why on earth did you bother to cast her????

the infantilization of beanie is very weird tbh. why did she pursue the role if she knows she doesn't have the vocal chops for it lol

Omg I didn't know it was revived specifically for her. That makes this whole situation even more embarrassing.

Someone educate me please. Is it supposed to be this different from the version on Glee?

I know there's Defying Gravity vs Defying Gravity (the pop version), but I didn't think DROMP was going to be this different.

EDIT: Ok....nevermind. After watching the Julie Benko performance below....I get it. It's just Lea.

It really irks me that this racist is having a comeback moment.

Although I found it interesting that there have been other examples of cast recordings that weren’t 100% the original cast, I wonder if there have been any instances like the new Funny Girl situation where there was no recording of the original cast and then there was a recording after cast change(s) in the lead role(s).

It’s happened a couple of times; some examples that come to mind are the 90s She Loves Me revival, which didn't include Judy Kuhn, and I believe both recordings of A New Brain

I know of a few musicals where this happened, mostly where the recording was done later in the run after someone left the show for another opportunity (movie, tv show, another musical, etc) and couldn't come back for the recording. Or wasn't as good of a singer as their replacement lol.

I love the Pearl Bailey Dolly recording! I think it might be my overall favorite (certainly better than 2017).

Not surprised they’re giving her a cast album. What’re the chances she’s gonna get some bs honorary Tony as well?

This part from the article made me fear they will revive this category just to give Lea an award:

Country star Reba McEntire's run in the 1999 Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun, replacing Bernadette Peters in the title role, was so well received that it led to the creation of a "Best Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Recreated Role" category for the Tony Awards. Spoiler alert: The nominating committee never nominated anyone in the category and discontinued it the following year in an odd change of heart.

I doubt they’ll bring it back, not after the fiasco in 2006, but I can definitely see the producers campaigning for her to get recognized in other ways and there being enough support in the industry due to her turning the show around
