Mariah was heavily criticized early in her career about her lack of stage presence, "not paying her dues" and called a studio singer. It's the reason Tommy had her do Unplugged. And to be honest, the critics were right. Mariah has zero stories of herself working the stage circuit honing her performance and singing skills. She never even did her school choir. She stayed in the studio doing demos. Tommy did Mariah no favors hiding her away during the two years between signing her and the release of her debut. Her TV live performances were awkward as fuck.

Daydream tour (which was only 10 dates; her first proper tour wasn't until Charmbracelet in 2003) was the first and last time Mariah looked comfortable on stage. And was the last time she mostly sang live. The problem from then on out was her doing vocals in the studio she couldn't duplicate live. That whisper singing and high belting is fine in the studio, but she's never been able to consistently keep it up live or sometimes do it live at all (end of WBT, I'm looking at you).
