her bf was struggling with alcoholism and she thought it would be cute to cheat on him?

I think this is a stretch. I’m from England and it’s considered normal to a lot of people here to go out getting pissed up every weekend. That doesn’t mean everyone who does it is an alcoholic.

It's called alcoolisme mondain
And if you feel the "need" to do it, it's probably an issue

Not like drinking perfume at 10, but still worrying

He didn’t say he felt the need to do it though. If he had said he he couldn’t go a weekend without drinking a lot, I’d agree.

"I would only consider it a weekend if I was drunk out of my mind on a Friday and Saturday night.

Boy might be being coy about it, but lbr, he was passed out drunk every weekend
He had history of alchool abuse on the set of tlotr too

I can’t say I view it quite the same way, but again, it could be down to where I grew up. Drinking on weekends was just the norm and people went back to their every day responsibilities during the week. He sounds to me like someone who just liked to party on weekends. I don’t know about any drinking issues he had during Lord of the Rings though, so I can’t comment on that.

The word 'consider' does a LOT here; if you're making the CHOICE to go out and get drunk every weekend, you aren't an alcoholic...

There's no 'consideration' with alcoholism; it's a need, not a want.

I would suggest anybody who thinks his drinking didn't reach a level that was unacceptable read the entire article. He talks about waking up and not knowing where he was, being distressed that he could have ended up dead - his drinking and drugs were a problem, regardless of if it reached the level of addiction.

It's amazing to me that people are denying someone had an alcohol problem when they describe blacking out, not thinking its a weekend if they don't get smashed, passing out, not knowing where they are, and being afraid they may die when they drink lol. Like, surely that goes beyond just social drinking?!

Probably another case of ONTD Doesn't Read lol

Binge drinking is so common that people don't like acknowledging it's a problem. If someone is binge drinking every weekend, they have a bad relationship with alcohol.

yeah just because it's the "norm" culturally doesn't mean it's not a problem.

yeah one of my british friends once told me "most of my friends have multiple drinks a day, it's normal here" like normal for y'all, maybe, but your liver would disagree

It's definitely a problem; it just isn't how I would define alcoholism.

(although losing track of your surroundings and thinking you're going to die certainly fit more comfortably with that term!)

I love how he's acknowledging his own issue and people react with "he's just english"

this type of drinking culture is so normalized and accepted in certain places but that doesn’t really make it okay
