in short, yes.

there is a user on tumblr (hear me out) who is extremely knowledgeable about early hollywood history, to the point where i would call her a historian despite not having published anything (at least, she hadn't when i still followed her), that shared some very detailed thoughts on christina and mommy dearest. she cites numerous media/sources that either directly contradict christina's claims, or point to them being gross exaggerations. it's a lot to read, but if you're interested i was able to find one of her most exhaustive posts about the subject.

Why did she disown her? (I saw the movie when I was a kid so I don't remember much about it...just the haaaaaaaangers!!)

there has been speculation that joan knew of christina's plans for a tell-all prior to her death, but i'm not positive.

she disowned both of the children who alleged that she abused her, but not the ones that sided with her.

this user was working on a book iirc, but it's been a while.

yeah, i know that she dealt with a lot of health issues that made the process difficult. it looks like she's still posting, though, so hopefully that means she's doing alright! she was always such a sweetheart when i would reach out to her, and i was able to see several films i otherwise might not have thanks to her generous sharing.

i have no idea who this is but this reads post like it was written by an overly defensive fan, not a historian.

i can see how you might read it that way not knowing anything about the writer, but she's a very research-based person who has read extensively about the topics she chooses to discuss. otherwise, she'll direct people elsewhere. i don't think being a fan means she can't also be speaking to information she's gleaned from extensive research, which she mentions having done. but that's just my opinion.

WHAT???? NO WAY. I've spent my entire life believing that story, even when I didn't understand a damn thing about it! Holy shit, this is insane!!!

On another note... really wish people on Tumblr had readable layouts!!

spanking a child for running away from home and causing chaos wouldn’t even be that outrageous today, especially if it was known that Joan calmly explained to christopher why he was going to be spanked and that what he had done was very wrong and dangerous (christopher eventually became a juvenile delinquent who often made the press, so the spankings obviously didn’t work, or he just really was determined to prove her wrong-also, he literally spat in Joan’s face as a teenager and said “i hate you,” so, chew over that if you will).

that part made me discount every opinion that tumblr user put forth tbh. an abused child spat at their abuser and said he hated her. makes sense to me.

all i will say is that not all of what's written is opinion. i did cringe at that portion of the writeup, but i think the argument being made was that joan used corporal punishment to an extent that was not extraordinary at the time (i don't think it should've ever been used, or seen as normal, but we have ricky ricardo spanking lucy immortalized on film in the 50s... it was a different time). she wasn't, as was put forth in mommie dearest, tackling and choking her children, beating them with hangers, cutting their hair off for looking at themselves in the mirror, etc.

i think christina was exaggerating and became a shitty person, but i think it was because of the abuse. there are people out there who did back up her claims. there were police reports, iirc. i'm sure she remembered it a little differently, but i don't think i can discount her claims because of someone who runs a crawford fan page.

i HOPE it was all bullshit, tbh, but i (unfortunately) believe the abuse absolutely happened.

i don't think we'll never know the whole truth. i haven't read anything about police reports - usually, the "evidence" people point to as proof of abuse in discussions i've read is hearsay by other actors, and ones who had professional differences with joan at that (though not, ironically, bette davis). and there are claims made by christina that are categorically false, for example that joan's twin daughters were not in fact twin sisters or sisters at all but that she presented them to the world as such ( ... )
