We took in an outside cat last fall and like she literally just started coming downstairs, EVERYTHING scares her, tv, fans, etc. she is actually really sweet and loves pets and snuggling in bed, but it is concerning to me how little she has acclimated to her new environment.

It's so difficult with skittish cats. I found the only way was to find another more outgoing cat for bonding.

Was she feral or did someone ditch her? It can take some cats years to bounce back from trauma or just acclimate, sounds like you've been super patient with her, just the kind of people she needs.

Her ear was tipped so she had at some point been caught and spayed -- and while she was outside she would come up to us and we actually made her a cute little heated house but winter was coming and we knew she would have a rough go outside. I just feel bad for her b/c she LOVES attention and pets and its like if she would just come down to the living room with the rest of us she could get that all the time!

Some cats need more time, especially if they are feral. I had a rescued barn cat, and it took her years to not be so scared of people and my dogs. She eventually warmed up and would come have snuggles, but it took her a long time.

Have you tried pheromone diffusers? It really helped my cats after we moved to a new place.

yes, to minimal help, we actually used them for our other cat who takes "spiteful poops" outside the litterbox if he doesn't get fed when he thinks he should -- he actually took a shit right under one of the diffusers!! he is now on prozac which has has also barely helped lol, but i always say i'd rather pick up cat poop than deal with cat pee.

Ah cats! Drive me crazy but I just love their defiant and petty natures.

A little over two months ago I brought home 4 little kitten siblings who were just the most scaredy I've ever seen in my life of cat rescuing. You couldn't even look at them and they'd run and hide under something. I kept them "locked" in my room separated from the other cats until they started at least trusting me, because I feared that if they went out in the yard I wouldn't be able to bring them back inside again because they wouldn't let me near them.

Well, it worked! I can pet and pick them up like normal now, so this past Sunday I finally started letting them out of my room and what do you know, now they don't really want to leave haha (but they do, and the other cats don't mind them either)

I set my cup down a little too hard this morning and both my cats went flying through the air like I'd set off a bomb.

I have a cat like that too. If I approach her she seriously cowers like she expects to be hit. She was an adult when we adopted her and I really wonder what horrible shit she saw in her old life.

But she's so sweet too... When she approaches me she purrs so hard she drools! We've had her for a year and a half and there's been no huge improvements though. We leave her be, and she's happy enough with the other cats and being played w from a distance.

Thank you for taking her in and being patient with her. Hopefully she'll start relaxing and trusting you more with each passing day. But I'm glad she's with someone who cares 💕
