really sad episode, ow. I guess this must have been the show Leighton was talking about when she says her love interests in things now are like, 50
didn't play out at all how I was expecting when I realized we were going back in time, it was way more brutal ow
can't join anyone on the Charly hate train, sorry. I think her perspective on Isaac is pretty important. My only beef is that they had to make it a romantic thing with Amanda in this episode, because I liked the idea of being furious on behalf of your best friend. Kind of bummed me out that they had to make it into more -- being righteously furious because you lost your best friend should honestly be enough.
Loved the moment where Gordon blurted out to Ed that he was forced to kill animals to survive. I like those moments of reminding us that these people in the future truly have different values.
I don't mean to continue disagreeing with y'all in this post haha but I enjoy all the nods to continuity. This show has earned its continuity.
on another note I watched the pilot of Strange New Worlds and I feel like I would be over the moon in love with it if I didn't have the Orville to compare it to right this moment lol. As it is, I thought it was pretty darn good!

I agree! Especially since she kept hammering home how Amanda was her best friend in 03.01. The lead up to that relationship being more wasn't really there. It should have been enough.

I agree that her perspective is important & her anger is justified and righteous even if they hadn't made Amanda her love interest, which is why I wish she were being played by a more competent actor but anyway...
There's a thread I follow on other forum which is great for keeping up with the show during off-seasons but mostly terrible for critiques because it's populated by male sci-fi nerds, but one guy posted a really thoughtful critique about how he's not vibing with the show this season because of the needless, unexamined cruelty the show's putting its characters through. And while I don't necessarily agree with most of his points, he raised an interesting one about how thoughtless it is that Charly's being made to serve on the bridge with Isaac and how command is being unsympathetic to her pov.

Can't speak for everyone, but I always appreciate discussion whether we agree or not.

!!! I'm glad you enjoyed it tho! I just want more good sci-fi shows. They're my comfort.
Why is Charley being "forced" to say though? Why can't she just leave? senshi_foreverJuly 9 2022, 14:55:56 UTC

Okay, this is something I'd like to discuss with other people since I'm curious about this whole concept. I really, really don't understand why Charley seemingly chose to take a posting aboard literally the only ship in the fleet with a Kaylon member as part of the main crew. I don't understand why there wouldn't have been other postings on other vessels. I also refuse to believe that she didn't know about Isaac beforehand, unless she took the posting before Isaac was reinstated -- since the timeline on this isn't very clear from the show itself (so this is possible). But even if that were the case, why not just transfer once she realized he was coming back? Cassius transfers when Kelly breaks up with him in season 2, Kelly offers to transfer in the pilot, it seems really easy for people to transfer to other ships/postings at any time, for literally any reason. I don't think it's difficult at all.
So I don't think she's being "forced" to serve alongside him on the bridge, not really. She has the choice to stay or go, and she chooses to stay. Now, I think her hatred is being drummed up for drama/plot purposes, and I think it might be a bit too much sometimes because it sort of gums up the gears of the plot in my view. I have full confidence that we'll have a satisfactory ending to this, but it's interesting to speculate in the meantime.

Possibly! Maybe she's staying out of spite at this point? She thinks she's worthier of being on the bridge over a war criminal. Like I mentioned upthread, when the show started The Orville wasn't the choice assignment in the Union, but now it would be "the" place to be.
That guy's point was also that somewhat nonsensical things are being done to serve the plot, and that command would have evolved past the point of compromising their ethics by keeping Isaac around, which I disagree with and I think the show's made a good case for why he's still there.
