Wait, can we talk about Charly? I know she's kind of a trope (that biker bar scene did not help) and started off as a foil, but it is that the actress is flat? Because I think a better actor would have been able to sell this by now. She's giving CW.
I feel you. A more skilled actress would have been able to provide the role some nuance, but as it stands she just reads as one of those, “not like other” girls.
It sucks because I like LITERALLY everyone else in the show. Hell, they ditched Alara and brought in Talla and now I like her, when Alara was my fave. Telaya, like her even while she’s a radical zealot. Fucking Klyden while hateful made for a compelling antagonist. I think it’s really just the actress.
Can you imagine a Julia Garner type in that role? Idk why she's the first one that came to mind, possibly because Anne was doing some weird Madonna cosplay a couple of years ago trying to get the role that Julia just booked. Or the actress who plays La'an on Strange New Worlds? Someone who can really sell the anger, pain and grief but is also capable of dry humor.
Definitely agree with every point in that second paragraph. Even if a character is despicable, as long as the actor is selling it, it's still compelling.
