I think to me Robert Pattinson still has the best quote regarding method acting.

But lol I’m loving all these actors coming out and taking a dump on the pretentiousness of it.

Yessss something along the lines of “you never see someone method acting a nice character” he was so right

Yeah I had a whole realization of it cause prior the only criticism was how pretentious and annoying it was.

But he tacked it on great by highlighting that no one ever uses it to play nice pleasant people. Which is true, it's usually morally corrupt, mentally insane, difficult characters that you'll hear about method acting.

No one prior to him had highlighted that ever.

I agree with his comment, but deep in my Christian Bale phase I know he (Bale) talked about the characters his wife liked when he “brought them home.” There was the definite implication that he went a little method even with kind and sweet characters.

That's interesting because Willem Dafoe said Rpattz went method for The Lighthouse 🤔

Reading what has been said about what Robert did during The Lighthouse, it sounds less like Robert was trying to emulate the character 24/7, which is what a lot of other method actors do, and more like Robert was trying to have the physical duress the character undergoes be real (e.g. trying to actually vomit instead of fake vomit), but while still keeping the personality of the character as just a character for the camera's rolling rather than trying to embody the role even outside of that. Still gross and annoying, and Dafoe and Eggers told him off for it, but I don't necessarily think Robert contradicted himself either.

You're right about how Pattinson was just using his own technique before a specific take, not method acting, but Pattinson was not told off by anyone. Dafoe saw what Rob was doing and said to the director, "I don't want him to throw up on me," and that was the end of it. There was no drama ( ... )

Ah, okay. I misunderstood then. I didn't know about the other stuff either. That piano story is really sweet.

Pattinson didn't, he's never gone method for any role. I guess people don't understand what method is. He has his own process where he psyches himself up before a take by jumping up and down or in the case of The Lighthouse, putting dirt in his mouth, trying to make himself vomit, etc.

That's not close to method acting.

there is also one by Gary Oldman, although I have never figured out when did he say it

"Any actor who tells you that they have become the people they play, unless they're clearly diagnosed as a schizophrenic, is bullshitting you."

My favourite quote about method acting is Laurence Olivier's iconic "why not try acting, dear boy? It's easier"

that one is such a classic, there's also a good/similar Dirk Bogarde one that's something along the lines of "what's your motivation? your motivation is your paycheck darling, but try and do some acting too"
