I still agree with Del Toro. We have to stop acting like 4-5 people alone make a movie, and considering the hell of the pandemic, the least the academy could do is properly honor their own.

but then i also agree with seth rogan than it's pretty fucking weird that the academy thinks everyone should care about their industry awards, when none of us stop everything for another's.

People who act like an Oscar is just another industry award are deluding themselves. They act like industry awards for dentists and accountants are just as interesting as an award show filled with celebrities and entertainers.

I actually don't like attitudes like Rogen cause trust me if The Disaster Artist gone farther in the award seasons and won his ass would be there!

Like he ain't gonna be there at the Emmys in Pam and Tommy get nominated! he will!

Yeah he would have been because as he said, it's his industry. Obviously people in the biz care about their own awards. That's not exactly a gotcha, because he said they matter to those in that industry. He didn't say he didn't care about awards and is above it, all while going to them like a number of rock stars have done over the years ( ... )

It's not narcissistic of the Oscars since no one is forcing you to watch. The only people paying close to attention to these developments are people in interested in movies. Regular people are not concerned here. Plus people like the escapism of the red carpet. Even people who don't care about awards but like fashion will tune in or be following it on social media.

You're only hearing about it because we're on a gossip site.

I think, and based on the ratings for the oscars I'm not alone, that those who act like everyone must worship at the alter of celebrity, and care, genuinely care about this one industry award over all others, is pretty deluded. Even in that industry for years now you've had filmmakers talk about how it's not even the achievement in filmmaking that some think it to be, or how they hold other industry awards as being more significant because they're far more diverse and don't worship at the idea of english speaking only film, and are less of a popularity contest. Parasite was an outlier and even the director ripped on it for being "a local film award".

And that's without the easy baited argument of maybe given the state of this world we should care more about those being recognized for genuine achievements to our collective history, those changing or saving lives. because what they do is every bit as important, often more so.

ia, every single category is important to filmmaking. Remember when they wanted to take away the cinematography award from the ceremony?
And if they want a shorter show, then why don't they focus on just giving the awards instead of looking for hosts and doing other pointless things during the ceremony, like the SAG Awards do? Some people like that stuff. Personally, I'm only interested in the nominations and the awards.
