Went to see a screening of Velvet Goldmine last night. I've been wanting to watch it for years, but it's not available streaming anywhere and it's out of print on blu-ray, so when I saw this screening pop up, I was psyched.

I've liked some other Todd Haynes movies well enough, but this was easily my favorite of his films that I've seen thus far. Super weird, surreal, and clearly a passion project, all things that beat an okay drama like Dark Waters for me any day. It's messy and rough around the edges, but I think that added to its charm for me.

I knew Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers were in it, but no one warned me about Toni Collette and Christian Bale!! My husband thought CBale was miscast, and I can't say I totally disagree, but Toni was fucking great. Enjoyed the Citizen Kane structure, the visuals, the music, and just the general OTT vibes. And it actually fit in perfectly with all the 60's + 70's music docs I've been watching, which was a fun bonus.

The only thing I'm currently planning to go see this weekend is the IMAX Beatles Rooftop concert thing, and I'm actually very excited about it!! lol

Oh wow this comment just gave me intense nostalgia! Lol. My friends were very into this movie in high school! I haven’t seen it since then but I loved it. I probably still have my VHS copy around here somewhere 😆

I love Velvet Goldmine, I wish I still had my VHS. Or I’ll grab a copy on eBay, looks like there’s a few.
