I remember watching a video (either on YT or somewhere else) talking about how between JT's 20/20 album release in 2013 and Mayo of the Woods in 2018, Bruno Mars blew up and snatched a lot of JT's musical and performing thunder. Everything about MotW sucked from the music to the corny concept that nobody was buying into, but I also think there's a lot of truth in that about Bruno's emergence too.

I always thought Mayo was his attempt to sway some red state people to support him, it was during a time where he was side eyed for all the sudden pulling out his living in the woods/country schtick. So that’s a believable addition to that theory too.

That makes perfect sense too. He was definitely trying to branch off into country music but his music was just bad and rudderless so nobody ended up embracing it lmao. It seems like a perfect storm to thwart his success. It'll be interesting to see how he does in the future now that the general public is more wise to his behavior after the Britney and Janet docs!

But JESUS. I totally forgot he released that song! This man has done so many deeply narcissistic unforgivable things. I just looked up the lyrics and they are legit about asking a woman to “surrender” and not wait to have sex. The exact opposite of what “Take Back the Night” actually means. Meaning after you told his team about this they STILL DID NOT RESEARCH the origin of that phrase or what it means for women. What a slap in the face.
