2021 Tony Awards

Sep 26, 2021 20:00

Calling all ONTD theater lovers (all 15 of us)! It's Tony night so let's discuss the winners, the losers, and the fashion.

If this picture doesn't sum up the juxtaposition of the Tony Awards, I don't know what does. Darlene Love, Matthew Morrison, Marissa Janet Winokur, Chester Gregory, and Kerry Butler perform at the Tony Awards.

i really wanted the chaos of aaron tveit not getting the tony. i'm also happy that laura linney did not get a tony because i have a personal silly grudge against her as a bit lol

i'm glad they did these now instead of last december or w/e when they were announced. i still have mixed feelings about them overall because so many shows open in march-april that like - yes they deserve recognition but from such a small pool?? idk idk. imo they should have had some focus on the shows that are/about to reopen because at the end of the day it's basically a huge promotion for the industry - like, yes definitely celebrate the nominees! but perhaps a short bit like "this is the tony's! we're celebrating these shows! and we can now see shows again! let's get emotional in the theatre together!" idek

I’m so curious what they would have done if he didn’t receive enough votes. Would they have just pulled the category and do a quick press release afterward? It seems so cruel to announces the results live if he didn’t win.

For musicals, there definitely weren’t enough shows open to have the awards. With the lack of new shows this season, they probably should have combined the two seasons together but that would have been unfair to the plays.

how can you lose an award when you are the only person nominated

According to the rules, he still had to receive 60% of the votes in order to win.

I was there, too! So much pent-up energy, plus the Tonys anticipation? Crazy.

I don't have too many strong feelings about the winners this year because I either didn't get to see them or saw them way too long ago (ex. Audra's nomination for a performance I saw in July 2019), but I'm still kind of annoyed most of the awards were shunted off to an online streaming service you had to pay to use. For some winners in the non-acting categories, an acceptance speech at the Tonys is their only opportunity to be in the spotlight and it sucks they didn't get it this year.

That being said, I do understand why the producers wanted to stage something closer to a concert than an awards show. And I'm definitely not mad at that Brian Stokes Mitchell/Audra McDonald duet.

Bc of COVID? I’ve been in and out of the city for work and I’d say it’s fairly safe, most New Yorkers take this shit very seriously and you can’t even go into restaurants or theaters without a vaccination pass. I think it’s safer than some suburbs where people are anti mask and anti vax (such as my suburb lol)
